In December 2006, AEG was contracted to investigate the subsurface conditions of the property adjoining a pump station occupying the park. During subsurface exploration, AEG determined that much of the park was impacted by urban fill materials and laboratory analysis of soils indicated elevated levels of lead, chromium, and poly-nuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Groundwater was also sampled as part of the investigation and found not to be impacted. AEG completed a Massachusetts Contingency Plan (MCP) Phase II Comprehensive Site Assessment to document the extent and nature of impact. As part of this report, AEG also completed a Method 1 Risk Assessment to show present soil quality posed a Significant Risk. During the completion of a MCP Phase III report, AEG selected a remedy which would include capping of the park with a geotextile fabric overlaid with two feet of clean fill. AEG will continue to manage and oversee the completion of the project and anticipates the reopening of the park.
